Mission
Discovery Place Preschool program is a ministry of Christ United Methodist Church. We strive to provide a safe, nurturing, high-quality, developmentally appropriate program for children ages 18 months through Pre-K. Our goal is to provide for each child’s emotional, social, physical, cognitive and spiritual needs in a safe and loving Christian environment. We communicate God's love and grace to children through words and actions from the teachers and leadership staff. We endeavor to instill in each child their own capacity to show love, respect and compassion towards others. As a community, our greatest hope is that our students grow on a foundation of God’s love and basic bible principles, that they develop a love of learning with an insatiable curiosity, and build life-long friendships that begin in our program.
Our Preschool
Discovery Place Preschool is a ½ day preschool serving children ages 18 months-5 years old. We are housed inside the Christ United Methodist Church in the Millcreek area.
We first opened our doors in 1997 as Parent’s Day Out. We provided full day drop-in child care for about 18 years. We then transitioned into a ½ day preschool program in 2015.
We offer ½ day preschool Tuesday through Thursday that begins at 8:45am and ends at 12:30pm. We serve children age 18 months - 5 years old. The preschool year typically begins in September and goes through May. We also have a summer program that serves children 18 months - 9 years of age.
Our Preschool has low teacher to student ratios. We have two teachers in each of our classrooms. This averages out to 1 teacher to 4 children in our youngest group and 1 teacher to 8 children in our 4/5 Pre-K class.

Our Teachers
It might be reassuring to know that the qualities that you value in a person to look after your child are just the kind of qualities that we value too. Warmth, sensitivity, knowledge and understanding are the characteristics we look for and value in our teachers at Discovery Place Preschool. Our teachers LOVE to come to work. They love interacting with the children and helping them to grow and learn new concepts. Currently we have 9 teachers on our staff. Together, our current teachers have over 40 years of teaching experience just at Discovery Place Preschool!
We are always looking for substitute teachers to fill in when one of our teachers is out. If you're interested in substitute teaching with us, please get in touch with us.

Safety and Wellness
Child safety is our top priority. Each of our teachers go through CPR/First Aid certification within 2 months of being hired and our teachers renew their certification every two years after their initial hire. Our teachers go through an extensive background check that includes written reference checks, as well as an online safety training course. Our school also goes through fire drills, earthquake drills and other drills on a regular basis.
We understand that kids get sick. Children are great at sharing, and unfortunately this sometimes includes sharing illnesses. However, we do have some steps we take to minimize exposure to unwanted germs. We ask parents to keep their child home if they are showing symptoms of being ill. We clean toys and surfaces in the classroom with a bleach solution on a daily basis and we ask our students to wash their hands upon arrival and dismissal each day to help control germs as well.
